Brenna

columbus oh singing instructor

Brenna is a singing and trumpet teacher from Springfield, OH. She’s new to Chambers Music Studio, but she’s been playing since the 5th grade, and she’s incredibly talented! Check out our interview with Brenna!

What is your favorite instrument to play?

Currently, my favorite instrument to play is actually the bass guitar! I am absolutely not the best at it, but one of my favorite hobbies is learning new instruments. I’ve been playing brass instruments and singing for forever, so having an entirely new kind of instrument to learn with bass guitar has been refreshing and really fun!”

Did something you see or hear inspire you to want to be a musician?

“My grandmother and my family inspired me to pursue music. My grandmother was in a church choir would take me with her on Sundays. I got to sit up in the choir loft with her and the other musicians. I was obsessed with the music they made and was fascinated by the organ. After that, I was determined to learn every instrument I could. Music is a very big part of my family life. From belting songs in the car on road trips to inventing new harmonies singing on the porch in the evenings, they all inspired me to learn as much as possible.”

What do you enjoy most about playing music?

“I enjoy the freedom and connection that playing music provides. Singing and playing instruments with others provides a sense of connection unlike any other. Getting to perform with those I care about brings me so much joy. There is also a connection with the audience. I will never forget the first time someone said my performance moved them.”

Do you have a favorite experience from being a musician?

“In college, I was a member of both The Ohio State University Marching Band and The Ohio State University Women’s Glee Club. My final year in both of those was so special, as The marching band did a show to honor the 50th anniversary of women being allowed in the band due to the passing of Title IX. When the show idea was floating around, I had suggested to invite the Women’s Glee Club to perform with us. The directors loved the idea and had the Women’s Glee Club join the marching band to sing one song on the field with them. I got to march the show and then run up and sing with the Glee Club during the performance. The performance meant a lot to so many people, and seeing the joy it brought my fellow musicians and the audience is one of my proudest moments. My musical identity is so dependent on the collaboration between musicians, especially as an instrumentalist and a vocalist. Having the opportunity to bridge that gap between a marching band and a top-level choral ensemble was a beautiful moment, and I am so glad to have been able to participate on both sides.”

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

“My favorite part of teaching is watching students be proud of themselves. Many times in lessons, there are times where an instruction just clicks with a student and you can tell they love the sound they just produced. I make active self-evaluation a huge part of my lessons because I want my students to be proud of themselves and their progress. Watching them have a moment where the try something new and just LOVE the sound they produced is so inspiring. You can tell those moments are really what makes them want to continue and keep making music.”

What is your favorite hobby?

As cliche as it sounds, my favorite hobbies are listening to new music and learning new instruments. I adore taking walks and putting on random playlists and obscure radio stations to find new and exciting music. I create a playlist on Spotify every year that is a collection of all of my favorite new music I find. I also really love learning new instruments when I have time! My primary instruments are trumpet, voice, and piano, but I have loved exploring some new ones like ukulele, guitar, bass, trombone, flute, and saxophone. I love how my experiences with one instrument will transfer to another. For example, taking my first voice lessons really changed how I approach tone on the trumpet. I love getting to use these new experiences to find new approaches to familiar instruments.”

What is your favorite food?

“My favorite food is sushi. I am an avid cook and love trying new foods, but sushi has been my favorite since I was in middle school.”

What is your favorite movie?

“My favorite movie is La La Land. The message really resonated with me and I love the music in it. I actually wrote my college entrance essay on how I related to the main character, Mia.”
