The #1 Woodwinds & Brass School

The jazzy fun instrument. You can find these instruments in concert bands, jazz bands, marching bands, and symphonies. Many of the woodwind instruments like clarinet, flute, and saxophone share similar fingerings and most of the brass instruments have similar mouthpieces making for an easy transition from trumpet to trombone or euphonium. Maybe you’re a really excellent student on the trumpet and you’re ready for a bigger challenge with tuba or French horn. Taking private lessons is a great way to learn a new band instrument quickly.

Which Instrument?

Which instrument should you choose? When it comes to band instruments like woodwind and brass, many students start with one instrument before trying another. Some people select specific instruments because a good friend or family member plays it. Maybe you like how it looks and feels in your hand. Perhaps you tried out several and feel like you sound best on the trumpet. If it’s the light airy flute, jazzy saxophone, or fearless trumpet, we’ll help you master your instrument so you can perform with confidence.

Woodwind Lessons

The most typical instruments you’ll find in this family are clarinet, flute, and saxophone. While each instrument is unique in it’s own right, many students can easily transition from clarinet to saxophone or flute to piccolo, because they all have similar fingering patterns. Once a student becomes proficient in one woodwind instrument he/she can begin to develop skills among many of the other woodwind instruments. If you’re a student hoping to master multiple instruments, this is the family for you! Whether you’re interested in the airy flute, expressive English Horn, or jazzy Saxophone, we can teach you how to make music with your favorite instrument.

Saxophone

Saxophones are single reed instruments. There’s three main types of saxophone: alto, tenor, and baritone aka bari. These all share the exact same fingering. Once you learn one saxophone, you can easily learn the others, making you a very versatile musician.

Clarinet

This is also a single reed instrument that shares the same fingering with the saxophone. The childhood favorite classical piece, Carnival of the Animals “Cuckoo” has a cute clarinet solo. Many students transition easily between saxophone and clarinet.

Flute

These are silver with a light, airy, and floaty sound. You’ll sound like a bird fluttering or a little river floating. It’s that beautiful instrument you always wanted to play because your grandma played. Now you’re learning it too! The hardest part about the flute is the embouchure and breathe support. With our teachers you’ll get great technical support to help you play those long passages with excellence.

Double Reeds

Double reed instruments are also members of the woodwind family. English horn, oboe, and bassoon use double reeds. This difference creates different tone qualities. The bassoon has a nasal sound while the oboe is bright, and the English horn is mellow and expressive. The oboe is the instrument that tunes the symphony before performances. The opening solo to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue is a bassoon in it’s highest register, and Berlioz’s Symphony Fantastique has a gorgeous English Horn solo too. You’ll hear a great oboe solo in the Nutcracker and Dvorak’s New World Symphony.

Brass Instruments

Welcome to the world of brass. You’re bold, fearless, and bright. You love to be the center of attention and to show off to your friends. This family is loud and proud. Usually gold or silver with similar mouthpieces, these instruments use a buzzing embouchure to create vibrant tones. The technique between instruments differs, but don’t worry, we’ll help you figure out the difference and similarities. Dr. Bliss is the best brass teacher around; she’s a highly educated musician and teacher aiming at educating her students in a fun atmosphere. She’s rocking it out in this brass band piece.

Trumpet Lesons Trombone Lessons

Trumpet

You’re definitely in the spotlight here. Seeking to show off you high notes for Easter morning, or your brassy tunes in a jazz band. This instrument is definitely fun, but only has 3 valves to change pitch. All the rest is up to you and that awesome embouchure. Don’t worry, our teachers will help you work it.

Trombone

This is another popular beginning instrument for young students. It uses a slightly looser buzzing embouchure than trumpet, and is more laid back and mellow. It doesn’t have keys or valves! You change the sound by sliding the slide. That’s how you get that cool New Orleans Blues slides.

Tuba/Euphonium

Euphonium is a great transition instrument between trumpet and tuba. It’s smaller than the full tuba making it easier for students to carry around. It’s also a great instrument for those enthusiastic students that have played many other instruments and just need more. These instruments provide the bass, foundation of music. Without the deep bellowing bass notes, the music just seems incomplete. You’ll learn to develop a full breathe support to sustain those long deep tones that really fill up the room.
