Musical Life Podcast Episode 21: Worthington Band Director Interview: Meg Alexis

Meg Alexis has been teaching in Wellington Schools for about 15 years and works with sixith, seventh, and eighth-grade bands. Her husband is also a middle school band director, and they have two sons, making for a “very musical family”. Her six-year-old son has recently started piano lessons.
In this episode of the Musical Life Podcast, we talk to Meg about her own personal journey starting with piano and trumpet and how years of dedication and passion led her to becoming a band director.
From Humble Beginnings
Megs love for music was ignited early on in life, her father, who had an appreciation for music, would take her to symphony and jazz orchestra concerts. When her family moved from North Carolina, they specifically chose a church with an “amazing music program”. Meg’s earliest memories are of hearing the church choir, the organist, and old hymns, which instilled in her an appreciation for music from an early age.
In elementary school, Meg took piano lessons and later joined the band in sixth grade, choosing the trumpet
Music As A Way of Life
After college, Meg’s musical journey evolved from being a performer to a teacher, a role she has embraced for 15 years. Although she initially considered becoming a high school band director, her first job teaching middle school changed her mind, and she fell in love with the age group and the process of teaching beginners. She finds it gratifying to witness the incredible growth of her students, from not knowing how to open a case to performing a polished concert.
Meg’s story is a testament to the transformative power of music, not only in her own life but also in the lives of the students and family members she inspires every day
