Jenna’s love for music began when she was young. As a kid, she sang in as many choirs as she could find and spent hours experimenting with composition software, learning about music, and following her curiosity wherever it led. That curiosity never really went away, and today she feels fortunate to be able to engage with music so frequently through both performing and teaching.

Jenna is a singer first and foremost, and vocal music remains at the center of her musical life. When it comes to performing, choosing a favorite piece is nearly impossible. She especially enjoys singing works by contemporary classical composers such as Libby Larsen and Nico Muhly, while also having a love for musical theater and the works of Stephen Sondheim.

For Jenna, though, being a musician is about much more than performing. One of the things she values most about music is how much it can teach us about people and the world around us. Music often overlaps with history, literature, culture, language, and many other areas of study, constantly introducing musicians to new ideas and perspectives.

That same appreciation for music’s ability to connect people plays an important role in Jenna’s teaching.

Her favorite part of teaching is watching students learn how to support themselves and one another through music. She believes music can teach empathy in a profound way, helping students become not only stronger musicians, but also more thoughtful and supportive people.

Jenna is inspired by people who choose to do good even when doing so is difficult, a value that connects closely with the care and empathy she brings to her students.

There is always more she wants to learn, too. Jenna hopes to continue improving her piano skills and would someday love to explore music production.

Outside of music, Jenna loves to read, and her reading list includes a little bit of everything. She also enjoys attending performances and exploring local restaurants and grocery stores. But one of her favorite places to be is simply at home, curled up and spending time with her cats.

Jenna’s curiosity, compassion, and love of learning are wonderful examples of the many ways music can help us understand ourselves and the people around us.

Congratulations, Jenna, on being our Teacher of the Month!
