Bexley Percussion Student Spotlight: Eva Munn-Thomas
We’re excited to spotlight Eva Alona Munn-Thomas, a 9-year-old fourth grader and student at Chambers Music Studio!
Eva began taking piano lessons when she was five years old. At the time, though, piano wasn’t the instrument she was most excited about. “I really wanted to learn how to drum,” Eva shared. “But they like to start you on the piano first.” Not long after beginning piano, Eva started taking drum lessons too, and now she plays both piano and drums!
Interestingly, piano has actually become her favorite instrument. “Piano is actually my favorite!” Eva says. “I don’t accidentally hit myself with drum sticks and it helps me type better on the computer!” She would also love to learn how to play the ukulele someday.
Music That Makes Her Happy
Eva loves being able to listen to music and then work toward playing music like what she hears. For her, making music is also simply fun. “Playing the piano and drums makes me feel happy,” she says. “It is fun to pound on the drums and get my energy out. It also helps get out any negative feelings I may have sometimes. Around the time she became especially interested in drumming, Eva was listening to music from the 2021 movie Vivo, particularly the song “My Own Drum.”
Making Music Together
One of Eva’s favorite musical experiences right now is being part of the Songwriting Ensemble at Chambers Music Studio, led by Mr. Saffron. Eva says, “It is a lot of fun to play music in a group rather than alone.”
Through the ensemble, Eva gets to experience another side of musicianship by creating and making music alongside other students. The group is currently working toward a special goal, too: performing their original songs at the Life at Chambers Festival in January! For Eva, making music with other musicians has already become one of her favorite parts of her musical journey, and we’re excited to see her and the rest of the Songwriting Ensemble take the stage at the festival.
Her Musical Goal
Eva has one very clear goal for herself: she wants to get really good at playing the piano. After beginning piano at age five, adding drums soon after, and now participating in the Songwriting Ensemble, Eva has had the opportunity to experience music in several different ways, and she’s continuing to build from there.
Get to Know Eva
Outside of music, Eva’s favorite subject in school is writing, and she loves playing Scrabble and Uno. When it comes to favorite foods, choosing just one would be difficult! Eva loves baked potato soup, her mom’s homemade mac and cheese, sweet potato casserole, and cookies and cream ice cream.
Her favorite place to visit is St. Thomas, and one day she would really like to travel to Paris.
Ask Eva which famous musician she would like to meet, and her answer is simple: “I want to meet them all!” A few of her favorites include Taylor Swift, Jessica Baio, Sombr, Ruth B, Iniko, Ziv Zaifman, Black Violin, Beyoncé, Kylie Cantrall, Alicia Keys, Pink Heart, Jack Black, and Zoe Wees.Eva’s love of piano, drums, listening to music, and playing alongside other musicians makes her musical journey uniquely her own. We’re so excited to celebrate Eva Alona Munn-Thomas and see where her music takes her next!
